Comics & More

Category: Comics (16 listings)

Comics & More is a great place to get your comics, cards, action figures, and general pop culture fix. Open since 1992, we pride ourselves on being a family friendly environment with a diverse clientele. We host gaming nights for the kids, as well as adults. Friday nights you can come on out and play some Magic the Gathering, or Star Wars miniatures. Saturdays we have open play for Dungeons & Dragons miniatures. And Wednesdays (new comic day) are always a blast here as you never know who you will run into or what the topic of conversation will be. You might run into Rob Worley, comic creator (Advent Rising, Young ancient one, Brian Yuzna's Horrorama) and writer of young reader series Heir to Fire; Or Mike Ortiz, creative director for film distributor Anchor Bay; How about Ryan Kalusney, author of the novel, & Guest. Wait, who's that excitable fellow near the front door, feverishly flipping the pages of this week's books, pointing out the cover of the week and asking the serious questions about who would win in a fight between Superman in the new suit or in the 1930s suit? Well, that's our store mascot, Chuck. Don't forget to say hello.

Donna, Jordan and I once again spent the first Saturday in May visiting comic shops throughout the Metro Detroit area to celebrate Free Comic Book Day! My son Jordan continued his annual tradition of waking up even earlier than the year before (6:15 this time). For his costume choice this year, Jordan combined elements from prior FCBD costumes to create “Captain Bat,” which was basically his Captain America costume and shield combined with his Batman mask and cape.

The first comic shop on today’s agenda was our "home" store: Comics & More in Madison Heights, Michigan. A line started forming outside the store around 10:30, and the store was packed within minutes of opening the door at 11:00. Owner Chris Brown was well prepared for the crowd with a great selection of freebies. Each person received any five comics of their choice, a full size Wolverine movie poster, a mini Star Trek poster, and a promotional Wolverine foam claw, which got a huge reaction from the kids and created a lot of photo opportunities throughout the day. I also noticed that Comics and More had a greater variety of the FCBD titles than other stores. To help handle the crowds, Chris received some much needed assistance from volunteer David Glover, who previously worked at Comics and More for nearly 10 years, and helped to keep things going smoothly. Local artist Terrell Culbert from Breathe Again Entertainment spent the day sketching, and Donna received a free autographed copy of Moonstone’s Robin Hood #5 from writer Paul Storrie. In addition to everything else, Chris held a raffle for a custom made Deadpool Mighty Mugg that Terrell created using one of the “blank” white molds, and it looked incredible. Chris Brown once again delivered a fun and family friendly event that everyone enjoyed from start to finish. Without hesitation, I gave this store a Five Star Rating (out of five, my personal scale).

At the end of the day we ended up with about 18 of the FCBD titles (not counting duplicates) along with other freebies. Before we got home around 3:00 pm, we made another quick stop at Comics and More to check in with Chris Brown, who was desperately trying to get in a few bites of pizza while the shop was still very busy. Just before we left, we took Jordan’s picture with the Joker, who was waving in customers on the sidewalk in front of the shop. Very few people can generate the level of sheer excitement for this industry like Chris Brown can, and we applaud him for it.

Comics & More may appear to be a small store but it carries a wide variety of comics and gaming paraphernalia. The owner, Chris, has a great love for the comics industry and is pretty knowledgable on the subject. For that personal, homey touch just come down to Comcis & More and enjoy!

There is no comic book shop in Michigan that makes you feel more at home than Comics and More in Madison Heights. For 15 years previous owner Tom Schriver ran a comic shop that provided a perfect balance of not only providing its club members with the best in comics and graphic novels, but also running Magic, Yugi-oh, and other gaming tournaments for all age groups. Last year Tom turned over the shop to current owner Chris Brown, who continues to provide club members, gamers and walk-in customers with outstanding products and services. If you find an unusual toy or collectible in the pages of Previews, Chris will order it for you. If you need an obscure Indie title, Chris will make sure it's in your membership box waiting for you. Need an example of great customer service that you won't see at other shops? When a recent issue of Wolverine was released with a special variant cover celebrating the classic EC Horror Comics of the 1950's, most shops were selling this variant edition for $10-20. When Chris had an opportunity to snag a stack of extra copies from his distributor, he made them available to any customer who wanted one, not for $10 or even $5, but at cover price !

With Chris Brown's background in marketing and advertising, he has done an incredible job of increasing his customer base over the past year through tv commercials, internet presence, in-store promotions, and even a recent store review in the pages of Comics Buyer's Guide.

In addition, Chris has expanded the scope of Comics and More with his many movie and entertainment connections, providing customers with "extras" such as raffles for free movie tickets to blockbusters like the Dark Knight, or freebies from major comic conventions. During this year's Free Comic Book Day celebration, no shop in the area was more packed with people, as Chris featured local artists, free comics, buttons, posters and even an appearance by Supergirl. My 4 year old son even received an Iron Man Mask and Repulsor Ray toy set just for being the first kid to show up in costume.

If you're looking for a comic shop that has the product you need, that places the customer first, and provides a haven for great comic, gaming and movie discussions with fellow collectors, then Comics and More is the place for you!
