Main Art Theatre

Category: Indie Theater (10 listings)

Operated by Landmark since 1997. Like the city of its location, the Main Art Theatre offers something for everyone. Located in the heart of downtown Royal Oak, it is surrounded by a number of galleries, restaurants and other one-of-a-kind businesses that have come to typify this funky enclave. The theatre was originally built in the early 1940s as a single-screen theatre. As the face of Royal Oak changed, so did that of the Main Art, embracing an eclectic mix of sophistication and fun. Today, the theatre features the Detroit area's finest selection of independent film and foreign language cinema.

Been going there for years so being more familier helps. Good location, staff, movie selection, interesting demographic who go there. Nice art gallery and the very BEST popcorn! One of a few who still use real butter not that hydrogenated motor oil!

Love the "old school" feel of this theater and appreciate their non-blockbuster offerings.

Great environment. The place feels like an old theatre, but in the best, nostalgic, out-of-the-past kind of way. Friendly Staff. Great prices. Awesome movies.

They are a true supporter of independent films. The rates for theater rentals are reasonable and the facility is just the right size.

The Main Art Theatre rivals any NYC, Chicago or London, UK indie art theatre. Not only do they show the latest and greatest art-house flicks but they also host fantastic film festivals and special events. I also happen to look out at it from my living room window!
