Scarab Club of Detroit
Category: Art Gallery (75 listings)
Detroit's historic Scarab Club has been dedicated to serving the public and Michigan artists of all disciplines for 100 years. The club accomplishes this mission through classes, lectures, exhibitions, special events, and tours. The Scarab Club strives to promote local artists, emerging and experienced. It also hosts a variety of educational and instructional events.
Works by Michigan artists are always on display in the galleries. Each year the club hosts four juried and four invitational exhibitions featuring established and emeriging artists. Member exhibitions are shown in the second floor lounge gallery.
The Scarab Club building, constructed in 1928, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a site of historical and architectural significance. The club features a main gallery, a spacious beamed lounge area with fireplace, artists' studios, and a walled garden and courtyard. Over the decades the beams in the lounge have been signed by club presidents, supporters of the arts, and well-known local and international artists, such as Diego Rivera, Norman Rockwell, Marshall Fredricks, Marcel Duchamp, Tyree Guyton and Elmore Leonard.
Galleries are open to the public from noon -5pm Wednesday thru Sunday and during evening and weekend hours for special events.

It is a wonderful piece of Detroit history that has supported the arts for 100 years and I think it was the most gorgeous gallery I have ever been to. Not only that but it emphasizes Detroit artists all the time, not just exhibitions. I also had the pleasure of getting a personal tour of the grounds from an employee out of the kindness of their heart. We didn't even ask, she just offered. Being there was one of the best days I have ever had and I recommend it to anyone and everyone who is going to Detroit!

Beautiful Gallery with unique shows and artists, a cozy bit of history right in the middle of the city. This is where the really important artists in Detroit have gravitated for a century...

There is no place on earth like this. The spirits of the beam signing artists keep the friendship and comraderie going. (It is kind of spooky to be sitting up there in the lounge under Norman Rockwells name.)
This is such a group of friendly people. They have accepted my eccentric art. I feel at so home there. They would probably let me hang a drawing on the refrigerator!!
