Scarab Club of Detroit

Category: Art Gallery (75 listings)

Detroit's historic Scarab Club has been dedicated to serving the public and Michigan artists of all disciplines for 100 years. The club accomplishes this mission through classes, lectures, exhibitions, special events, and tours. The Scarab Club strives to promote local artists, emerging and experienced. It also hosts a variety of educational and instructional events.

Works by Michigan artists are always on display in the galleries. Each year the club hosts four juried and four invitational exhibitions featuring established and emeriging artists. Member exhibitions are shown in the second floor lounge gallery.

The Scarab Club building, constructed in 1928, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a site of historical and architectural significance. The club features a main gallery, a spacious beamed lounge area with fireplace, artists' studios, and a walled garden and courtyard. Over the decades the beams in the lounge have been signed by club presidents, supporters of the arts, and well-known local and international artists, such as Diego Rivera, Norman Rockwell, Marshall Fredricks, Marcel Duchamp, Tyree Guyton and Elmore Leonard.

Galleries are open to the public from noon -5pm Wednesday thru Sunday and during evening and weekend hours for special events.

My parents went to the Scarab Balls in the late twenties and early thirtys. Visit and absorb the History! Still here! A great place!

The urban setting of the club appeals to me probably the most. Located in one of the older areas of the city, I get inspiration when I visit even though I'm have zero artistic talent.

There's a buzz around town that the old Costume Ball is revived! Can't wait to party! Glad this historic institution is celebrating its centennial by reviving an old tradition on September 29th!

A great place that facilitates all areas of artistic expression; especially the visual arts. The staff here is always friendly and has an immeasurable amount of experience and knowledge. Treena Ericksson, the Gallery Director, creates one of the most comfortable and enlightening gallery experiences in the city, even if you come with an untrained eye! The building is a piece of art itself -- check out the ceiling beams on the second floor for a who's who of the arts community -- local and international -- there's a lot of history in this place. Now, go VISIT!

Love the Scarab gallery. Bought the book The Scarab Club Images of American by Arcadia - packed full of information about Detroit's art history and prominent Scarab artists and patrons through the organization's 100 year history. Happy 100th birthday! I enjoy the outstanding art exhibitions, both the juried and invitational. I especially enjoy the wide variety and depth of art displayed by local artists.

Vestigial spirit of an era representing growth, experimentation and grandiosity (forgive me if that's not a word). It represents what Detroit was, should be, and what could be again.
