The Old Shillelagh

Category: Irish Pub (21 listings)

John Brady and Charlie Taylor opened the Old Shillelagh in February of 1975. It was an immediate success. Charlie, a singer, brought in his fans, and John who had lived part of his boyhood in Dublin, kept the place oiled and running. Later that year they exercised their option to buy the building and immediately began remodeling the second floor.

In 1986, John and Marlis Brady decided to retire and sold the business to their daughter Barbara who had years of experience working for them. The following St. Patrick's Day Barbara put up huge tents on the adjacent parking lots and thus began "The World's Biggest St. Patrick's Day Party".

In 2005, in time for the 30th Anniversary, Barbara made her daughter Shellie and Nancy, close friend of the family, managers and now a third generation runs the daily operation of the Old Shillelagh.

Anyone who knows anything about Irish Pubs in the Detroit area knows where to be on St. Patrick's Day (or any other day, for that matter!) but GET THERE EARLY. When people start lining up at 2am, you know it's the place to be.

For my 29th birthday, I could go to any bar in the metro Detroit area to celebrate, and I chose to go to the Old Shillelagh. The staff is awesome, and that Detroit River Water is delicious to say the least. I plan to spend many more birthdays there. Perhaps next year by way of a limo bus? we'll see...

Black Mist is the best Irish band in the area, and they play at the Old Shillelagh! They are a lot of fun, and they get the crowd singing along.
