The Village Food Market has narrow, cramped aisles that challenge the most skilled cart navegator, especially if you travel with kids in tow. The prices are on the high side, as well. That being said, the selection is awesome for a small store, including more unusual and gourmet ingredients. The meat counter is wonderful with top-notch meat. But the best thing about this market is the staff who are constantly offering their assistance. The butchers have helped me pick out the best meat for my meal, the deli man gave me a sample of lunch meat before I bought it, the produce guy went to fetch me a cart when I overloaded my handbasket, the manager summoned someone to load my groceries into my car for me when he saw me with a large load and two toddlers. All of this without me asking for it - I am not the type to ask for or expect this type of service. If you want friendly service like it used to be, this is the place.

Zingerman's is the gold standard for bread, in my opinion, due to the wide variety of specialty flavors and the superior crust on all their loaves. I don't think their cakes and other sweets are in the same league, though. Not that they aren't delicious, but I prefer other bakeries for sweets.

Topz is the place to go when you want a burger and fries without that heavy feeling after you finish eating. The baked fries are healthier for you, but taste as delicious as those fresh from the fryer. The cooks/servers are very friendly and very attentive, which you might not expect from a burger joint. Kid-friendly and a good value for the money.
